The AR-10 is a versatile rifle that can easily handle different situations. Whether you need it for self-defense or engaging targets at long distances, this firearm has you covered.

If you’re looking to enhance your shooting experience or improve accuracy, consider adding a muzzle device to your rifle. Wing Tactical offers a wide selection of AR-10/.308 muzzle brakes, flash cans, compensators, and more.

.308 Muzzle Devices: Flash Cans, Muzzle Brakes, and More

.308 Win isn't a small cartridge. It has a lot of stopping power with a long effective range.

However, it can also kick quite a bit, especially when shot from a shorter barrel. The strong recoil of the AR-10 can make it challenging to maintain control, especially when firing rapidly. Additionally, AR-10s with short barrels can have quite a significant muzzle flash and a concussive muzzle signature. This can make it very challenging to shoot the rifle indoors, and in tactical situations, it can also expose your firing position.

However, these problems can be solved by installing certain muzzle devices that can modify and manipulate the expanding gasses from the muzzle to achieve lower recoil, noise, and muzzle flash: AR-10 muzzle brakes, for instance.

AR-10s, like any other rifle, support a wide range of muzzle devices. They range from flash hiders to muzzle brakes and blast shields.

Muzzle Brakes

Muzzle brakes solve the heavy recoil and muzzle rise problem for AR-10s. .308 Win is a heavy cartridge that generates a lot of recoil; however, by redirecting the muzzle gasses against the recoil impulse, a muzzle device can significantly decrease felt recoil and make it easier for you to shoot more accurately.

Flash Hiders

When it comes to rifles chambered in .308, a barrel length of 20 inches is commonly regarded as the best choice for optimal ballistic performance. If the barrel of your AR-10 is shorter than that, you'll notice a significant muzzle flash with each shot fired.

Blast Cans and Linear Comps

Blast cans and linear comps are used on rifles that have shorter barrels. They are common on AR-10 SBRs, and they redirect the concussive muzzle gases away from the shooter, making it easier for them to focus on their target.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you lose velocity when you use a muzzle brake?

Since muzzle brakes extend your barrel (instead of effectively shortening it, like built-in gas ports might), shooters are unlikely to lose muzzle velocity once they install a muzzle brake.

Which muzzle device is right for your .308?

Your choice of muzzle device will likely depend on your needs:

  • If you want to reduce felt recoil, consider a muzzle brake for your .308.
  • If you’re trying to improve accuracy on repeat fire by reducing muzzle climb, consider a compensator.
  • If you’re trying to improve comfort or stealth in low light, consider a flash can or flash hider.

Do muzzle brakes make .308 louder?

While muzzle brakes won’t make your rifle louder overall, firing with a muzzle brake will sound louder from the shooter’s perspective. Without a muzzle brake, combustion gases (and sounds) are directed downrange and around the end of the muzzle. Since a muzzle brake redirects some of the forward-moving gases around the muzzle, some of the combustion sounds will be effectively directed closer to the shooter’s ears.

Simply put, a muzzle brake won’t make your rifle louder, but it will certainly seem louder when you’re firing it.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a muzzle brake?

Muzzle brakes can help decrease felt recoil — this is certainly their greatest advantage. But they can also make firing seem louder from the shooter’s perspective. If you’re highly sensitive to concussive firing sounds, a flash can might be a better choice.

Do muzzle brakes affect accuracy?

Muzzle brakes aren’t intended to impact accuracy. However, shooters may feel like they have superior control over their firearms on repeat fire once they install one since their felt recoil will be reduced — this improved control could help shooters improve stability and fire more confidently, perhaps improving accuracy over time.
